{"id":1781,"date":"2025-04-01T09:27:06","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T09:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.anthonyhouse.org\/?p=1781"},"modified":"2025-04-03T21:06:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T21:06:09","slug":"more-effective-measures-needed-to-tackle-food-waste-in-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.anthonyhouse.org\/index.php\/2025\/04\/01\/more-effective-measures-needed-to-tackle-food-waste-in-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cMore effective measures\u201d needed to tackle food waste in EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-beyondwords-marker=\"1fd656e5-d8c1-49d1-81d6-46333418fed7\" data-beyondwords-player=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-63309 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Food waste\" width=\"860\" height=\"516\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.circularonline.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/iStock-172481514.jpg?resize=860%2C516&amp;ssl=1\"><\/h4>\n<h4>More effective efforts at a national level are needed to reduce food waste across Europe, according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report.<\/h4>\n<p>Approximately\u00a0132kg of food waste\u00a0per person was generated across the EU in 2022 amounting to just over 59 million tonnes of food waste, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/publications\/preventing-waste-in-europe-progress-and-challenges-with-a-focus-on-food-waste\">EEA report \u2018Preventing waste in Europe\u00a0\u2013 Progress and challenges, with a focus on food waste\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment gives the latest bi-annual check-up on waste prevention actions via data and trends the EEA does in support of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/waste-and-recycling\/waste-framework-directive_en\">the EU\u2019s Waste Framework Directive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It found that EU Member States have taken action to prevent food waste by investing in monitoring, awareness and education campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>However, the use of regulatory measures or market-based measures, such as subsidies and financial incentives to prevent food waste, remains limited.<\/p>\n<p>To accelerate progress, a better understanding of prevention actions\u2019 effectiveness and tracking of progress is needed, the EEA report says.<\/p>\n<p>The report argues that waste prevention strategies should be\u00a0better integrated into climate and biodiversity policies and measures.<\/p>\n<p>It states that Member States should also follow guidance from the \u2018food use hierarchy\u2019, which stresses more efficient use and reuse of food products.
